Rep. Mehaffie Comments on House Action to Approve the 2019-20 State Budget

House lawmakers have voted to support a 2019-20 General Fund budget that continues a multi-year effort to hold the line on taxes, fees and spending. Total state spending would be set at $33.997 billion, a 1.8% increase over the current fiscal year, which is in line with the rate of inflation. The plan provides for a record level of spending on education and includes a deposit of more than $250 million into the Rainy-Day Fund, the state’s primary “savings account.” Rep. Tom Mehaffie (R-Dauphin) offered the following comments on the spending priorities of the budget plan.

A package of bills designed to bolster career and technical education and increase the number of family sustaining jobs in the Commonwealth have been approved by the Pennsylvania House and are on their way to the Senate for consideration. The Good Jobs for PA initiative is designed to help students prepare for the changing job market, while offering employers an avenue to help develop educational programs that will yield workers who have the skills Pennsylvania businesses need.

Mehaffie Introduces Bill to Value PA Nuclear Energy, Save Jobs and Keep Electricity Prices Stable

In an effort to prevent the premature and permanent closure of Pennsylvania’s nuclear power plants, Rep. Tom Mehaffie (R-Dauphin) today introduced legislation updating the Pennsylvania Alternative Energy Portfolio Standards (AEPS) Act to recognize nuclear energy for its significant contribution to the state’s zero-carbon energy production. Known as the Keep Powering Pennsylvania Act, House Bill 11 would amend Pennsylvania’s AEPS Act to include nuclear energy as a qualifying zero emissions energy resource. Mehaffie said this change would help control future electricity costs for consumers and ensure that existing nuclear power plants remain a viable source for Pennsylvania’s base load electricity supply.

Gov. Tom Wolf unveiled his 2019-2020 state budget proposal on Tuesday in Harrisburg. The $34 billion spending plan represents a nearly 1 billion dollar increase in state spending over last year. Rep. Tom Mehaffies (R-Dauphin) said he was pleased to see the Governor's budget plan contains spending increases for early childhood education.

Mehaffie Bill Would Assist Parents with Daycare Decisions

Legislation designed to aid parents in their daycare choices has been introduced in Harrisburg. Representative Tom Mehaffie (R-Dauphin) is the prime sponsor of House Bill 1742, which would require all state-licensed childcare centers to post their Keystone STARS rating on their websites and in their locations. The Keystone STARS performance standards address staff qualifications and professional development, early learning programs, partnerships with family and the community, and leadership and management. Mehaffie said he wants to make it easier for families to research and choose a daycare facility.
