House Passes Bill Aimed at Improving Long-Term Care for Seniors
The Pennsylvania House of Representatives this week approved my House Bill 1300 by a vote of 119-12. The bill would add the State Long-Term Care Ombudsman to the PA Long-Term Care Council.
Pennsylvania has one of the largest senior populations in the country, and following what took place during the pandemic I think we need stronger advocacy for our older adult community. Adding the State Long-Term Care Ombudsman to the Long-Term Care Council makes perfect sense and will only help to enhance the coordination and care of our senior citizens.
Pennsylvania’s Long-Term Care Ombudsman team works to resolve concerns expressed by older adults in long-term care settings such as nursing homes, assisted living facilities and personal care homes.
The office is federally required under the Older Americans Act.
Adding the ombudsman will enrich the council’s work by providing a voice for seniors and a focus on the challenges they encounter. This will be especially valuable as the Department of Aging develops the Master Plan on Aging.
House Bill 1300 is supported by the Department of Aging and now goes before the Senate for consideration.

New Online Resource for Service Members Leaving Active Duty
The Pennsylvania Department of Military and Veterans Affairs (DMVA) has launched “Welcome Home PA,” an online resource to help service members separating or retiring from active duty acclimate to a successful civilian life in Pennsylvania.
The Welcome Home PA site includes information about employment opportunities with the Commonwealth and in the private sector, furthering military careers with the Pennsylvania National Guard, guidance on how to use GI Bill benefits to attend post-secondary schooling or begin an apprenticeship, and more. DMVA also encourages returning service members to visit the PA Veterans Registry and PA VETConnect, which helps to connect veterans and their families with programs and services available to them after their service. Veterans can also access the PA Veterans Guide – an extensive resource offering information on veterans’ benefits, housing, information for veterans with disabilities and more.
To learn more about programs and services for veterans, visit www.dmva.pa.gov.

Fifty Years and Counting
I had a sweet time celebrating the 50th anniversary of Hershey’s Chocolate World at the state Capitol on Tuesday!
Hershey’s Chocolate World was founded by Milton Hershey on June 30, 1973 to delight the public with a behind-the-scenes look at the making of The Hershey Company’s world famous chocolate and confections.
I have introduced a House resolution designating June 30, 2023 Hershey's Chocolate World Day in Pennsylvania.

New Boat Launch Open on Fulling Mill Road
Last week, I finally got to cut the ribbon to officially open the Lower Swatara Township boat launch! When we arrived, several kayakers were already there and shared how much they like the new launch on Fulling Mill Road.
Tim Schaeffer from the Pennsylvania Fish and Boat Commission shared five tips for safe boating:
|
• |
Always wear a life jacket. |
|
• |
Do not boat while intoxicated. |
|
• |
Attend a safe boating course. |
|
• |
Tell a loved one where you will be and how long you will be on the water. |
|
• |
Purchase launch permits and fishing licenses through the FishBoatPA app. |
I wish everyone a fun and safe summer!

Out and About
On Tuesday, it was Seersucker Day at the PA Capitol. I broke out my seersucker suit to join the tradition started in 2006. Legislators, lobbyists and Capitol staffers are all welcome and encouraged to get in on the fun. This year's day was also used to raise awareness for the Dress for Success clothing drive.
I want to thank Lane Schultz for inviting me out to his property and speaking with me about issues in the area. Lane is a geologist who lives in Londonderry Township.
