HARRISBURG – The House today passed a $33.997 billion spending plan as the General Appropriations portion of the state budget. The legislation will now be taken up by the state Senate.
The General Appropriations bill passed on a 140-62 vote. Rep. Tom Mehaffie (R-Dauphin) was a “yes” vote on the bill and released the following statement:
“Our state’s positive economic climate allowed us to focus on saving for future tough economic times, reining in on state spending, demanding more accountability and transparency in the budget process, and investing in areas that will make life better for all Pennsylvanians, including agriculture, infrastructure needs, community safety, help for those battling addiction, and our schools and future workforce.
“This budget truly prioritizes our kids. In addition to investing $432 million more in pre-kindergarten to 12th-grade education, it includes additional help for our local libraries and Pre-K Counts early childhood education. These programs have proven time and time again they give children a foundation for future success, and I feel they are a smart investment to make for the future of our state.
“The House budget plan builds on the work we’ve been doing to grow opportunities in career and technical education in Pennsylvania. These hands-on programs, like the excellent training offered at Dauphin County Technical School, are essential to a trained workforce that can respond to the needs of today’s economy.”
