HARRISBURG – Rep. Tom Mehaffie (R-Dauphin) is taking steps to expand paid sick leave to essential workers excluded by the federal Families First Coronavirus Response Act.
Mehaffie, who is working in partnership with Rep. Patrick Harkins (D-Erie), intends to introduce a bill to fill the gap and grant two weeks of paid sick leave to essential workers, including those in the health care and service industries. Some of those workers were not covered by the federal legislation.
Mehaffie, who is seeking co-sponsors for the measure, hopes to see quick action in the House.
“Paid sick leave not only allows employees to take care of their own health, but with a communicable disease like COVID-19, it protects co-workers, patients and customers. This is particularly important for those who interact with the elderly. We need to do what we can to ensure essential employees can continue to serve our communities,” he said.
