We Will Never Forget!
This Monday marks the 22nd anniversary of one of the worst days in our nation’s history. On Sept. 11, 2001, nearly 3,000 men and women were killed in devastating terrorist attacks in New York, Washington, D.C., and Pennsylvania, including more than 400 first responders.
Those we lost on Sept. 11 will be honored and remembered in observances all across the country this weekend, including one at Pennsylvania’s own Flight 93 Memorial, near the site where one of the four planes hijacked that day crashed. The remembrance program will begin at 9:50 a.m. and will be streamed live here.

Dauphin County Commissioners Host Listening Sessions on Pennsylvania’s Master Plan for Older Adults
The Dauphin County Commissioners will host a pair of listening sessions on the Pennsylvania Department of Aging’s development of the Master Plan for Older Adults – a 10-year, state-led strategic plan designed to help transform the infrastructure and coordination of services for older Pennsylvanians.
The master plan will also reflect the needs and preferences of this population to live where they choose and access the supports they need to thrive and age in place.
The listening sessions will take place on Monday, Sept. 11, at 1 p.m. at the Millersburg Senior Center, 109 Edward Drive, Millersburg, on Thursday, Sept. 14, at 1 p.m. at the Leader Center for Active Life, 605 Cocoa Ave., Hershey.
Health care providers, older adults and people living with disabilities, caregivers, and community leaders are invited to hear an overview of the plan and its core principles. There will be opportunities for those in attendance to provide comments and input on the plan.
Individuals who are unable to attend can still provide input on the plan. They can either email AgingPlan@pa.gov or mail the Pennsylvania Department of Aging, c/o Master Plan, 555 Walnut St., 5th Floor, Harrisburg, PA 17101. Older adults and adults with disabilities are also encouraged to complete the Aging Needs Assessment Survey in the following article.

Aging Needs Assessment Survey
In its ongoing work to gather feedback for development of its Master Plan for Older Adults, the state Department of Aging has launched a survey to help people share their experience on what it means to age in Pennsylvania.
The survey is designed to capture the experience of older adults and adults with disabilities across a wide range of issues to ensure the statewide, 10-year plan can best address barriers in the service system. The goal is to ensure older Pennsylvanians and adults with disabilities have access to services that support improved health, well-being and quality of life.

Active Shooter Safety Seminar
On Thursday, Sept. 14, from 6-8p.m. at the Hummelstown Chemical Fire Co. (249 E. Main St., Hummelstown), Derry Township Sgt. Anthony Clements will be presenting a seminar on best practices in an active shooter situation. Please call 717-534-1323 to register or with any questions.

Be Prepared!
September is National Preparedness Month (NPM), and this year the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) is placing special focus on ensuring older adults are prepared for natural disasters or other emergencies.
According to the American Red Cross, there are several factors that make older adults more vulnerable after disasters, including their greater likelihood to suffer from chronic conditions and the need for associated medications; greater reliance on assistive devices such as walkers or glasses, as well as support from caregivers and others; and greater potential of social isolation.

Sign Up Today for November Veterans Appreciation Breakfast
Mark your calendar for my veterans’ appreciation breakfast on Friday, Nov. 3, from 8-10 a.m. at the Lower Swatara Fire Department, 1350 Fulling Mill Road, Middletown. This event is open to active-duty military personnel and veterans. Accommodations can be made for disabled attendees requiring assistance.
Seating is limited and registration is required online at RepMehaffie.com or by calling the district office at 717-534-1323.
At the event, we will be collecting worn, torn and defaced U.S. flags for proper disposal. The Dauphin County Veterans Affairs Office is also scheduled to be on-hand to answer any questions, and the Dauphin County Recorder of Deeds office will be on-site to register discharge papers, DD214s, and issue cards for the county’s Veteran ID Discount Card program.

Market Street Playground Butterfly Garden
Royalton Borough officials, in commemoration of the heroic service of Firefighter Shawn Menear, and also in memory of William Hardy who lost his life on Jan. 23, 2022, in a tragic fire, dedicated a butterfly garden in the Market Street Playground.
I was glad to have been a part of this beautiful dedication.
