Two Dauphin County Residents Appointed to Gubernatorial Commission, Mehaffie Says

July 9, 2026

HARRISBURG – Two 106th District constituents have been appointed to the newly created Governor’s Advisory Commission on People with Disabilities, according to Rep. Tom Mehaffie (R-Dauphin), who offered his support of both appointments to Gov. Josh Shapiro.

Shapiro made 28 appointments this week to the commission, which seeks to recommend policy changes and compile information about ways to create inclusive resources. Among them are Zachary Hicks and Sara Nye, both of Derry Township.

Mehaffie said he has been privileged to get to know Hicks, Nye and their respective families.

“Sara and Zach are tireless advocates for disability rights and inclusion. They have taught me so much about their challenges and accomplishments as they navigate life with Down syndrome,” Mehaffie said.

The commission was formed through executive orders to expand protections for Pennsylvanians with intellectual, physical and developmental disabilities; hearing or vision impairment; and autism.

Meg Kutz co-founded 3.21 For Life PA in central Pennsylvania to raise money and awareness each year on World Down Syndrome Day.

“I’m thrilled to see the commitment and resources from leadership in government to support people in our communities,” she said.
