Mehaffie, Kim Announce State Gaming Grants for Municipalities

HARRISBURG – Parks and sidewalks are among the projects that Dauphin County municipalities will be undertaking courtesy of Local Share Account (LSA) grants awarded today, according to Rep. Tom Mehaffie (R-Dauphin) and Sen. Patty Kim (D-Dauphin).

More than $1.1 million in grants awarded include:

• Lower Swatara Township, $475,000 for a new basketball court and playground equipment in Greenfield Park.
• Middletown Borough, $497,000 to replace deteriorating sidewalks and install handicapped-accessible curbs on several streets.
• Royalton Borough, $89,500 to address flooding between Canal Street and Water Street.
• Royalton Borough, $66,000 to purchase a police vehicle to replace one destroyed at an emergency scene.

“Our municipal leaders are doing more with less every day. Helping them with these initiatives will provide even more services within their communities and ultimately save local taxpayers money,” Mehaffie said.

“This round of state investments demonstrates just how important it is for us to come together to bring meaningful results to our constituents. I’m proud to work alongside my colleagues in the House to secure this funding, and I’m especially proud to see it going to our first responders, municipalities, nonprofits and other essential community organizations,” Kim said.

Additionally, Mehaffie advocated for a $995,058 grant for Harrisburg’s Zembo Shrine, of which he is a longtime member. Construction started almost 100 years on the building designed by architect Charles Howard Lloyd in a combination of Moorish revival and art deco styles. It is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Funding will be used to replace a boiler and sections of the roof.

LSA grants are funded by state gaming revenue, not taxpayer dollars. The funding was approved by the Commonwealth Financing Authority (CFA). This is an independent agency that holds fiduciary responsibility over the funding of programs and investments in Pennsylvania’s economic growth.
